A Conversation with Yu Hua

Noted Novelist Speaks at UCLA

P.S. I personally can not agree that " writers belong to market". It depends on what kind of readers there are in the market. It is true that serious music has fewer audiences ("qu gao he gua" ). If every author merely wants to please the mass, then there would be only popular music left in the market.

I just finished reading the novel " The Good Earth(1931)" and was breathtakingly amazed by its author’s knowledge of China. The genre of the novel  is pretty much like that of  another masterpiece–" To live" written by Yu hua. "To live" is definitely one of the most magnificent and overwhelming writings in the history of mordern Chinese literature.
Yesterday I happened to see the film "Pavilion of Women(1946)" which is the adapted version of the same novel written by Pearl Sydenstricker Buck.
Today I found the UP(university of penn) site dedicated to Pearl Buck.
Moreover, this talented writer also translated "shui huzhuan" (ALL men are brothers 1933) into English.
